Flexible working Arrangements: Future of the organizations





Introduction 

 

While so much of the world’s attention is facing on Pandemic disease era, the flexible working arrangements (FWA’s) are spreading at rapid speed in any organization. The Increasing proliferation of FWA’s become a global employment phenomenon with alternative work schedules increasing very popular in vary the time and place of work. Perhaps, the FW are changing evolving over several decades towards flexibility (Ware & Grantham, 2003).

 

Innovative solutions in designing and planning for organizations are being presented to further increase flexibility with ever more efficient uses of space, time and money, which can lead to both higher productivity and satisfaction of an organization  (Gozer, et al., 2018).

 

Type of FWA’s

 

FWA is a spectrum of work structures that alters the time and place that work gets done on a regular basis which includes, 

  1. Part time working 
  2. Working from home or satellite location 
  3. Job sharing 
  4. Compressed hours
  5. Flexi time 
  6. Phased retirement

Advantages & Disadvantages of FWA's

 

For Employees

Disadvantages

Flexibility to better meet personal needs

Difficult for office based staff to work as effectively with telecommuting staff

Reduced commuting time and traveling expenses

In the long run it might believe that such policies may affect their career development

Have more control over your time schedule and working environment

No clear dividing line between home and work

Can work during the hours that fit your energy cycles best

Team working moral reduces

Compressed work weeks may mean client availability suffers

Costs related for planning, coordinating implementation, training managers and controlling

difficult to measure comparing its cost

Feelings of unfairness when only certain employees have work that can be done remotely

FWA's in the Sri Lankan context

 

Many Tech companies are already started with FWA’s, however during the Pandemic era almost all the government & private companies are practicing FWA’s and hoping to continue.

 

Conclusion 

 

The above findings are clearly extend that if any organization adopting to FWA’s while refining their user friendly HR policy would reflect employees value work/life balance at the same time employers may attract more diverse innovative pool in globally which will help them in increasing their productivity, hope FWA's will be the future of many organizations.

It was new way of thinking time like this ,we all know that we are in a most difficult time as a country , first i need to thank you to bring new thinking of to over come this challenge.as we know sri Lankan is country more defend on services economy . that mean we need to put our physical effort more to generate the money to economy .according to my view point some time this theory more difficult to apply to most of the our industry . but may apply to some company's all so .even in your example mention in your blog most of the organizations are IT base company s. that kind of organization are more use to do there job using the information technology in that context this thing can apply very productive manner .but in a other end it may having the more difficulty's.

For example, a small or medium sized business is confined to a small facility or office, and can be explored by telecommunications to alleviate the situation without resorting to expensive placement or expansion.

  4. Although there are some disadvantages with regards to performing some job functions FW is an effective concept since people more focus on having their family time and continuing the job. It is easier for employees to concentrate on both their personal and job related activities.

  5. We have practically experienced " Flexible Working Arrangements ' during pandemic situation in the country. Since 'banking services' were essential , although there were lock down areas, employees who works in banks had to perform their normal banking services. As Down (2019) stated, we had to work from home, compressed time or flexi time ensure that the customer experience is at expected level. Although there are advantages as well as disadvantages of FWA, it helps a lot to balance work-life.
